We had just moved — house sold — studio in storage — my sculpting stand in the alcove waiting for its new home. 

The clay — a block — the curve of her back, I could see from across the room.  I thought of my nieces, Chelsea and Laney, being held by their mother.  One older, one newer to this world — a gentle, almost private moment they shared. 

I pulled off the clay — The late western sun cast a rose-like tint on them — One new, one old — a new time.  I named it “Beginnings.”
