On this page, you will see the influence of my many years of studying Rodin — and my continuing endeavor to capture the pure essence, the pure elegance of the human form.
The process begins when I find the shadows of the form in the clay. Then I block it our cubistically. I’ll see a line, a tilt of the head, a gaze, That is a magic spot — the essence of the piece that I never go back to.
What I’m doing with the smooth pieces is I stop myself. Because within 10 minutes, if I continue to work, they would become completely figurative. At certain point, my mind will switch ... I will either become intrigued by the 3-dimensional form and the challenge of how to keep movement in that stillness, and sometimes 2 minutes later there will be a figureative hand sticking out of the piece. I don’t know how it got there. I’ll switch and become so captured by the supple sensuousness of the human body ... it will lead me to a figurative piece — I accept this and allow the sculpture to speak in its own voice.
It happens very quickly. With my figurative pieces, my mind gets to dance with the clay a little more. My figurative pieces are very special to me.
